Kickstarter for full audio support for Unix Frotz

I’ve decided that I need to enlist some extra help to get audio support finally completed and working correctly and efficiently in Unix Frotz. My audio programming skills are not as good as I’d like, so I found someone who can do it for a fee. That someone is Mark D McCurry (fundamental-code.com/). To pay for this, I’ve created a Kickstarter campaign. This is intended to raise the $600 that Mark has asked for to reimplement audio support correctly. The target amount is $700 to cover overhead. Anything in excess of $600 after overhead will be a bonus to Mark.

For technical details, see https://gitlab.com/DavidGriffith/frotz/issues/27 and https://gitlab.com/DavidGriffith/frotz/issues/56

The Kickstarter page is at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2057605091/full-audio-support-for-unix-frotz

I’d like to see this happen. I made a small pledge. Hope it helps.

It’d be nice to play Sherlock Holmes with the bells and whistles.

The Kickstarter campaign has succeeded marvelously. 44 backers donated a total of $1078. All of this minus overhead will go to Mark McCurry as his fee. Thank you, everybody!

Woot! Fantastic!

Mark’s work appears to be complete. I’ve checked it and merged it into the Frotz master branch. There are a couple other issues outside the scope of the Kickstarter project that need to be addressed before a new release of Frotz can be made. These are faulty handling of the @sound_effect opcode and to not turn on the audio subsystem if the game’s header doesn’t set SOUND_FLAG in its header.

Over the next week I’ll be working on these two issues and adding the names of backers to their proper places in the Frotz codebase.

I’ve added the names of the $100 level backers to the manpage. The names of the $25 level backers are in CONTRIBUTORS. I’ve also added code that avoids turning on the audio subsystem if the game doesn’t indicate it wants to use sound. The final payment to Mark McCurry is on its way.

Still to be done is a check of how the @sound_effect opcode is handled.

This Kickstarter is complete. Thank you to everyone who contributed.
